  • Welcome to Christchurch, the gateway to New Zealand’s South Island. Upon arrival, collect your rental car and take some time to explore the revitalised city centre. Known as the Garden City, Christchurch is a blend of English heritage, contemporary architecture, and creative street art. Enjoy a relaxing first day discovering its parks, cafes, and riverside precincts.

  • Today, journey north through scenic countryside to Hanmer Springs, a charming alpine village known for its natural hot pools and mountain setting. Upon arrival, unwind with general entry to the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa. Soak in the mineral-rich waters surrounded by alpine views, and enjoy the serene atmosphere this region is known for.

  • Leave Hanmer Springs behind and drive through rolling hills and coastal roads to the seaside town of Kaikoura. Nestled between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Kaikoura is famed for its marine life and spectacular scenery. Spend the rest of the day strolling along the waterfront or sampling local seafood such as crayfish, for which the town is named.

  • Set out today on a once-in-a-lifetime Whale Watch Cruise. Kaikoura is one of the few places in the world where sperm whales can be seen year-round. Watch for breaching whales, dolphins, and fur seals as your expert guides share insights into the marine environment. The rest of your day is free to explore or relax by the ocean.

  • Today’s drive takes you up the coast and through vineyard-filled valleys to Nelson, a sunny city with a vibrant arts scene. Nestled on the shores of Tasman Bay, Nelson offers a relaxed lifestyle, golden beaches, and access to surrounding national parks. In the afternoon, explore local galleries, breweries, or take a walk along the waterfront.

  • Leave the city behind and take a short drive to Marahau, the gateway to Abel Tasman National Park. This tiny beachside village is the perfect base for exploring the region’s golden beaches and lush forests. Settle in and enjoy the peaceful coastal vibes in preparation for tomorrow’s outdoor adventure.

  • Embark on a spectacular guided cruise and walk with Wilsons Abel Tasman. Your day begins with a scenic boat ride along the stunning coastline, followed by the Pitt Head Loop – a beautiful walking track that offers sweeping views over turquoise bays and native bush. This immersive experience showcases the very best of the Abel Tasman’s coastal paradise.

  • Today, journey across the top of the South Island and down the rugged West Coast to Punakaiki. This small coastal settlement is world-famous for the Pancake Rocks – limestone formations that resemble stacked pancakes and shoot seawater high into the air through blowholes. Enjoy a scenic walk along the boardwalk and take in the raw beauty of the coastline.

  • Depart Punakaiki and make your way to Greymouth, where you’ll return your rental car and board the iconic TranzAlpine Train. Travel through lush rainforest, deep gorges, and across the Southern Alps, considered one of the world’s great train journeys. Arrive in Christchurch in the evening and check in to your accommodation.

  • Your South Island journey comes to an end today. Check out of your accommodation and make your way to the airport. Take with you memories of alpine adventures, coastal beauty, and unforgettable wildlife encounters. Farewell and safe travels!
