Starting in Queenstown, the outstanding beauty of the alpine ranges set the scene for this well loved visitor destination.
On your first day, settle into the charming alpine town and take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront. Enjoy boutique shopping, cozy cafés, and a delicious lakeside dinner as you soak up the spectacular scenery and relaxed vibe. It’s the perfect start to your South Island adventure.
Ramada Wyndham Queenstown Central -
Start your day with a touch of adventure as you embark on the world-famous Shotover Jetboat Ride. This professionally guided experience takes you deep into the spectacular Shotover River canyons, where you’ll enjoy an exhilarating ride filled with breathtaking scenery, smooth turns, and just the right amount of thrill — all handled with utmost safety and comfort.
In the afternoon, ease into a more relaxed pace with a ride on the Skyline Gondola, one of Queenstown’s most scenic experiences. Glide gently up to Bob’s Peak and take in sweeping views of Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, and the surrounding alpine landscape. Once at the top, you may wish to try a few leisurely runs on the Luge, a fun and accessible gravity-powered ride that’s as gentle or adventurous as you choose. Alternatively, simply unwind with a coffee or wine at the mountaintop café while soaking in the stunning panorama.
Ramada Wyndham Queenstown Central -
Leaving Queenstown you will find yourself heading down the road known locally as the ‘Devil’s Staircase’ which offers spectacular views and good photo stops along the way. As you wind your way down toward the southern tip of the lake, you will find a town called Kingston. Kingston was once a major transport link between the Whakatipu Districts gold fields and the shipping ports of Dunedin.
From here, you will make your way toward Te Anau, the gateway to Milford Sound and Fiordland National Park, often referred to as the 8th wonder of the world. Located at the edge of Fiordland National Park and on the shores of Lake Te Anau, the township has a picturesque outlook and some amazing dining options. Pop into the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre to make the most of your time here.
After a full day, settle into your accommodation and prepare to be amazed by your trip to Piopiotahi/Milford Sound tomorrow.
Distinction Luxmore Hotel Te Anau -
Milford Sound Piopiotahi is a Bucket List destination, described by Rudyard Kipling as ‘The 8th Wonder of the World’.
Experience the natural beauty, the incredible scale and the often, deafening silence of Milford Sound by taking a cruise deep into the Fiord. On boarding a RealNZ coach in Te Anau, travel along the spectacular Milford Road. There is time for photo stops and short walks along the way. On reaching Milford Sound, board a luxury RealNZ vessel for a Scenic Cruise the full length of Milford Sound to the Tasman Sea. The vessel provides excellent viewing opportunities and plenty of time is available to enjoy waterfalls, rainforest, mountains and wildlife. A comprehensive commentary is presented throughout the cruise. Barista made coffee and organic tea available for purchase on board the vessel.
Return transport to Te Anau is again by luxury coach, providing time to reflect on the beautiful scenery.

As you leave Te Anau head south toward Invercargill, drive through picturesque Southland farmland toward the coast. Tuatapere is home to the Hump Ridge Track, which is one of the Great Walks in the Southern Way.
Carry on your drive around the stunning southern coastline, through the seaside village of Riverton, where you can take a surf lesson or visit the Te Hikoi Museum, showcasing Southlands natural and cultural history (not included).
Settle into your accommodation in Invercargill before driving to Oreti Beach to watch the stunning sunset views and breathtaking starry skies.
The Lodges at Transport World Invercargill -
Your day begins in Invercargill with a fascinating stop at one of New Zealand’s most unique attractions — Bill Richardson Transport World. Enjoy a guided tour through this world-class collection of classic vehicles, vintage trucks, and rare memorabilia. The museum offers something for everyone, even beyond motoring enthusiasts, with beautifully curated displays, engaging stories, and even a nostalgic nod to Kiwiana culture. It’s a celebration of ingenuity and history that’s both informative and surprisingly inspiring.
After your tour, begin the scenic drive toward Dunedin, with the option to follow the stunning Southern Scenic Route through the Catlins. This lesser-travelled path unveils a remote and rugged stretch of coastline dotted with natural gems. Time permitting, you might explore Nugget Point Lighthouse with its dramatic sea views and resident wildlife, or pause for a photo stop at Purakaunui Falls, one of the most photographed waterfalls in the country.
As you continue on, the landscape transitions into rolling farmland and coastal cliffs before arriving in Dunedin — a city steeped in Scottish charm and rich in architectural heritage. Check in to your accommodation and enjoy a relaxing evening discovering the historic Octagon precinct, perhaps with a hearty meal at a local bistro or a stroll past the city’s grand railway station.
This day is the perfect blend of unique culture, scenic travel, and laid-back exploration.
