After settling into your accommodation, take some time to explore the city at your own pace. As evening sets in, you might decide to head to Arc Brewery, a new small brewery owned and operated by Jono and Emma, located up the road from Dunedin in Blueskin Bay. Being a small batch brewery there is always new beers in the pipeline while continuing to serve up taproom favourites. Their aim is to create fresh flavour-forward beers while considering the balance between creativity and drinkability. Enjoy dinner at one of Dunedin’s renowned restaurants, perhaps sampling local seafood or a hearty southern dish. Leave behind the quiet charm of Clyde and journey deeper into Central Otago as you make your way to the alpine energy of Queenstown. The drive begins along the edge of Lake Dunstan, with striking views of the surrounding hills and rugged terrain. As you follow the highway through the Cromwell Gorge, carved by the mighty Clutha River, the scenery shifts dramatically — steep, rocky bluffs tower above the turquoise waters, offering one of the most photogenic stretches of the journey.
Pause in Cromwell, a town that beautifully blends heritage and hospitality. Take time to explore the lovingly restored Cromwell Heritage Precinct, where galleries, cafés, and boutique stores are tucked into stone buildings from the gold rush era. The region is also famed for its vineyards and orchards, so this is the perfect place to stop for a wine tasting or a relaxed lunch overlooking the vines.
Back on the road, continue through the stunning Kawarau Gorge, where the twisting river flows below dramatic schist cliffs. This historic route once guided gold miners through the mountains, and today it’s a favourite among travellers seeking natural beauty and a touch of thrill — from bungy jumping off the Kawarau Bridge to jetboat sightings below.
For a charming detour, consider turning off to Arrowtown, a beautifully preserved 19th-century settlement. Stroll down the main street lined with gold rush cottages, explore the local museum, or enjoy a quiet coffee beneath the trees before the final stretch to Queenstown.
As you arrive in Queenstown, the scenery opens up to reveal the sparkling expanse of Lake Wakatipu framed by the dramatic peaks of the Remarkables. Whether you end your day with a lakeside stroll or a vibrant dinner in town, your journey from Clyde to Queenstown is one filled with history, scenery, and the perfect mix of relaxation and discovery.
