  • Arrive in Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island. Collect your rental car and spend your first day exploring this dynamic city, known for its English heritage, urban regeneration, and tranquil gardens. Walk along the Avon River, visit the Botanic Gardens, or enjoy a punt ride through the heart of the city.

  • Depart Christchurch and drive through the Canterbury Plains to Lake Tekapo, a turquoise alpine lake set against a dramatic mountain backdrop. In the evening, enjoy a magical stargazing experience with Tekapo Stargazing. Soak in the hot pools as expert guides point out constellations in one of the world’s best stargazing locations – a certified Dark Sky Reserve.

  • Spend a relaxing day enjoying the thermal hot pools at Tekapo Springs. Overlooking the lake and mountains, these pools are the perfect place to unwind and take in the alpine views. You can also enjoy optional spa treatments or tubing on the snow slope in winter.

  • Continue your alpine journey with a drive to Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, home to New Zealand’s tallest peak. Check in at the iconic Hermitage Hotel, nestled beneath towering peaks. Enjoy the dramatic scenery and fresh mountain air as you settle in for the night in this stunning alpine setting.

  • Today, delve into the history and wonder of the mountains with a visit to the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre. With your Explorer Pass, enjoy access to the museum, planetarium, and 3D theatre showcasing the legacy of New Zealand’s most famous mountaineer. Spend the rest of the day hiking one of the many scenic trails in the park.

  • Leave Mount Cook behind and head south through the Mackenzie Basin to the lakeside town of Wanaka. Surrounded by mountains and known for its laid-back charm, Wanaka offers a picturesque retreat. Take a leisurely walk along the lakefront or enjoy dinner at one of its cosy eateries.

  • Today, embark on a cruise across Lake Wanaka to Mou Waho Island, a predator-free reserve with unique wildlife and stunning views. With Eco Adventures Wanaka, enjoy a guided walk to the top of the island where you’ll find a lake… on an island… in a lake… on an island. It’s a truly memorable experience in nature.

  • This morning, drive through the dramatic Crown Range or via Cromwell to Queenstown – the adventure capital of New Zealand. Upon arrival, soak in the breathtaking alpine scenery and explore the vibrant town centre, packed with restaurants, boutiques, and lakeside views.

  • Your journey ends today. Check out of your accommodation and return your rental car before heading to the airport. Whether it’s the stargazing skies, alpine peaks, or island adventures, you leave with incredible memories of New Zealand’s spectacular South Island.
