Few destinations do family travel quite like New Zealand. The distances are manageable, the scenery changes around every corner, and the range of things to see and do means you can pack a week with everything from glowworm caves to gondola rides without anyone ever asking “are we there yet?” more than once.

It’s Easy to Get Around
New Zealand is compact. You can drive from Auckland to the Bay of Islands in around three hours, or from Queenstown to Milford Sound in about four. That means less time in the car and more time actually doing things — a big win when you’re travelling with kids. Self-drive itineraries are hugely popular with families because they offer flexibility: pull over for a lakeside lunch, spend an extra night somewhere the kids love, or swap a planned activity for a sunny beach day.
For families who’d rather not drive, motorhomes are a fantastic alternative — kids tend to love the adventure of it.
There’s Something for Every Age Group
This is where New Zealand really earns its reputation as a family destination. Younger kids are spellbound by the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, the kiwi and tuatara at Rainbow Springs, and splashing about at the hot water beaches of the Coromandel. Tweens love Hobbiton, the luge at Rotorua’s Skyline, and jet boating on the Shotover. And teenagers — often the hardest to please — tend to come alive around Queenstown, where bungy jumps, ziplines and mountain biking are all on the menu.
The trick is picking a few headline activities each person is excited about, then filling in the gaps with easier days in between. Every second day at full throttle is a recipe for meltdowns — ask any parent.

North Island or South Island?
If it’s a first visit and time is tight, pick one. Both islands deserve more than a couple of days, and trying to do both in a week usually leaves families feeling rushed.
The North Island tends to suit families with younger children — shorter drives, warmer weather, and the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua is pure magic for little ones. The South Island leans a little more adventurous, with the Southern Alps, glaciers, Milford Sound and Queenstown all within reach of each other. If the kids are older and up for bigger experiences, the South Island is hard to beat.
Families with two weeks or more can comfortably do both, linked by the Interislander Ferry between Wellington and Picton — which, for the record, is an experience in itself.
When to Go
New Zealand is a genuinely year-round family destination, and the right season depends on what the family wants out of the trip.
December to February is peak summer — long days, warm weather, and ideal conditions for beaches, lakes and hiking. It’s also the busiest and priciest window, so book early. Shoulder seasons (March–April and September–November) offer great value, quieter attractions and still-pleasant weather. And winter (June–August) opens up a whole different holiday: ski fields in Queenstown and Wanaka, snow play at Mt Hutt, and cosy evenings in front of a fire.

Accommodation That Actually Works for Families
Standard hotel rooms and a family of four don’t always mix. Apartment-style accommodation is a game-changer — separate bedrooms, a kitchen for easy breakfasts and the occasional pasta night, and a lounge where the adults can have a quiet glass of wine once the kids are down. Holiday parks are another popular option, especially for self-drive families, and often come with pools, playgrounds and jumping pillows that keep kids entertained for hours.
A Package Worth a Look
If your clients want the planning done for them, our New Zealand Family Holidays collection has a range of packages built specifically with families in mind — accommodation, car hire and the headline activities all bundled together. Prices start from around AU$3,139 per family (2 adults + 2 children), with longer multi-island options also available.
Every package is fully customisable, so if one family wants to swap in a Waiheke day trip or another wants to add a Hobbiton detour, we can make it happen.
